- What are the gaps in the system now and how should they be addressed?
- What strategies work best to equip young people with formal qualifications to continue their education and training?
- How do we get and share the resources to support models that assist young people to lead to formal qualifications?
- How do we demonstrate that a project is working? What evidence is needed; how should it be collected, presented and to whom?
Who will be attending?

The second round of Innovative Grants were advertised earlier this year for programs to maximize the outcomes for Year 10 students who will have three additional weeks at school this year, and received a terrific level of response.
While it was not possible to fund all of those that applied we are delighted with the projects that we are able to support.
We are also delighted that ‘Guaranteeing Futures’ in the Department of Education are likely to be following up on several programs.
Below is a list of programs that the Southern Tasmanian Youth Transitions Taskforce is funding.

The Southern Tasmanian Youth Transitions Taskforce has launched a film competition – ‘Lost in transition?’ — with substantial prizes.
The Theme
The film needs to be about transitions for young people moving, and think about moving from full time high school to further education, training and employment.
It will look at aspects of transition that might include: challenges, fears, hopes, opportunities, hurdles, decisions, stepping out, entering the unknown, moving to adulthood, and so on, from a student perspective.

The Southern Area Taskforce, sponsored by the Southern Tasmania Councils Authority, is a group representing young people, business, community organizations, local and state government which has been established under the State Government’s Guaranteeing Futures initiative to assist in improving the transition of young people from school to work, training or further education.
As part of its response, the Taskforce is seeking proposals for short-term local initiatives which, if successful, may become more broadly available for young people in the south of the State.

Innovative projects to help address particular challenges for young people in maintaining their education are being sought in southern Tasmania.
The Southern Area Task Force, set up under the auspices of the Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority as part of the State’s Guaranteeing Futures agenda, believes local community and education partnerships hold a key for ideas to help young people to stay in education, and in making successful transitions from education to work or training or further education.

The first meeting of the Reference Group was held on Wednesday May 30.
The meeting was chaired by Adriana Taylor, and over 30 people attended. The aim of the meeting was to provide an outline of the Southern Area Taskforce project and then to look at a range of issues which have been suggested as barriers to transition for young people.
The list of issues presented at the meeting have been developed from listening to a range of people and represents a work in progress. During the meeting there was a good input from those attending so the list of issues was refined and expanded.
The meeting ran out of time and the Agenda was not completed so there will be a follow up meeting on June 29 to look at solutions or outcomes to the issues and the setting of priorities.
